A Lake Carmel man is due in Town Court on July 12 to answer charges accusing him of imprisoning and stabbing a 25-year-old woman he hired to clean his apartment, police said.

Michael T. Hagner, 48, of Towners Road was charged with second-degree assault and first-degree unlawful imprisonment, both felonies, and third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. June 8. Sgt. Carlton Champagne responded to the Putnam Hospital Center emergency room after hospital staff reported treating a woman who had been stabbed in the buttocks. Champagne arrested Hagner about two hours later.

Police said an investigation showed that Hagner hired the woman to clean his apartment. He was accused of stabbing her and refusing to let her leave, police said, but she eventually fled.

Detective Kevin Douchkoff said yesterday that police were still trying to determine why the stabbing occurred. Hagner had little to say to police, he said.

Hagner, who was arraigned before Town Justice Peter Collins, was being held yesterday in the Putnam County jail with bail set at $7,500. The victim was treated at the hospital and released.
