Fieldstone Theft on Ressique Street
September 26, 2000
Two Putnam County men face grand larceny and criminal mischief charges for the alleged theft of a large quantity of fieldstone from the Big Buck Mountain State Forest in Kent.
Kent Police Chief Donald Smith said officers received numerous calls on Sunday morning reporting the theft off Ressique Street.
A patrolman responded and discovered a large fieldstone wall had been dismantled and carted off.
One of the callers reported a red truck was used by the perpetrators to take away the stone.
An all points bulletin was issued by police and a second officer saw the suspect's red Mitsubishi pickup on Gleneida Avenue in Carmel. The vehicle was stopped and the occupants taken into custody.
Chief Smith said the driver, Claudio Villa, 33, of Ossining, was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle since he had been operating the truck while his driving privileges were suspended.
The vehicle's two occupants, Marcelo Becerra, 37, and Jose Barretto, 21, both of Brewster, were charged with the felony offenses and were remanded to the Putnam Correctional Facility on $1,000 bail each.
Chief Smith said prior to their incarceration, the two men were returned to the Big Buck Mountain Forest area and the dismantled wall was reconstructed.
